http://stay.hakonavi.ne.jp/yunokawa/onsen.html

Let me give you my best secret hotel in Hokkaido. I have done so many researches on hotels close to Haokodate, this is the only one I go back every year.

My family has been going to Hokkaido during the summer for the last 4 years. We are going to Hokkaido again in a few days. Everytime we go, we stay here 湯の川プリンスホテル渚亭へ.

For Japanese,
http://nagisatei.info/

For English, http://nagisatei.info/english_new/indexEn.html

It has the most rooms with open air bath in Japan. You get to have the ocean view from your open air bath inside your room. Even the public bath is right at the beach. Basically you can just stand up and jump over to the sandy beach. The view is excellent.

I don't think many tourists stay there, that's a good thing. The food is the best I find in Hokkaido. Every year we go to Hokkaido, we always stay in different hotels, except here. We usually find hotel guest coming from Tokyo and they told us they come here.

Their price is good compare with other hotels in the same area. I always email them for the price and tell them how many people in the group and what type of room I like.

We always stay at 函館・湯の川, then move on to 登別, then move on to 定山渓, finally 小樽朝里. We are traveling with 2 small children, that's why you don't want to travel too far. We did drove every corner of Hokkaido few years ago without kids.

Hopefully you will find this information helpful.

HI Derek,

I am going to stay in this hotel on coming feb. I have a question, how do you go to this hotel from Jr station? You take bus or taxi ? Is it near the peak? Thank you

Mimimeow,

If you check their English web site under map/access, it will tell you its location on the map. It all depends on where you come from, train station or airport. 湯の川 is located in between train station and airport. It is a little closer to the airport.

Since we usually arrive Hakodate airport early in the morning by plane, we usually take the local bus (not many buses outside the terminal, but almost all go to the train station, just look at those signs) to the train station. The fish market is just right next to the train station, We usually leave all our luggage at the lockers inside the train station. We will eat breakfast there, check out the market, then walk alone the ocean side to the 金森紅磚倉庫. There are many places to explore. We usually spend our lunch before heading back to the train station, pick up our luggage and take the same bus (several bus will take you to 湯の川, the bus stop will be either on the same side of the hotel or the opposite. It is easy to find.

Oh, I think bus schedule is one every hour. The hotel even offer the tour for Hakodate mountain nightseeing. I spend most of the time taking hot bath in room and in public bath, and eating all those great seafood buffet. Kids loves it.

Let me know if you still need more information.

HI Derek,

I was thinking will it be very strange if we take our luggage on bus?

I will arrive there around 3 pm... any suggestion what should I do before the dinner? except hot spa in room? Do you think I still have time to take the train and visit some of the chruch?

Mimimeow,

We usually takes two duffle bags with us for family of 4. Most people travel with one pull up 20" or less luggage (most people travel light) and you can store them in locker (different sizes) at the train station. I think it may be ok to store your luggages at the hotel before the check in if you rather leave the luggages at the hotel. Since we move by train and bus in Hokkaido, we do carry our luggages with us. That's why it's important your don't carry huge luggages with you, and I really don't think you want to drag your luggages with you everywhere.

It all depends on what you want to do there. We love hot bath, especially our two little children. That's the reason we go every year. If you arrive at hotel around 3pm, you probably don't have much time to go back in Hakodate for sightseeing and come back for dinner. They have different time for dinner, but I think most start around 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, not sure about 8pm since Hakodate moutain sightseeing leaves around7-7:30pm during the summer.

If you really want to see Hakodate, you may want to take a taxi or other faster transportation to get you where you want to go. There are buses to those churches, but bus timing is important and it may take too much of your time. You may want to check with the front desk to see what your options are. I rather stay in hotel enjoy the hot bath, take a walk to nearby shops, check out the ocean view, have a delicious dinner, and take the tour for Hakodate night view from the mountain (one of world's three best night view). If you can arrive before 3pm, you have more options.

That's just my suggestion, others may have better ideas.

You are welcome.

Our family will be in Hokkaido around the end of December. I will post here about hotels we stay after the trip.

This is our first time visiting Hokkaido in winter. Hopefully we bring enough winter clothing this time.

Hi Derek,

How about the dinners? Is the buffet better or the Japanese course dinner better? Thanks.
