我打算8/25--9/05從芝加哥到阿拉斯加自助遊，因為時間很短，所以想請問各位前輩:這個時間要到哪裡才能看到極光，一定要進極圈還是在faiebanks或其他地方可以看到? 極圈裡面有什麼特別的活動或景點可以參加觀賞的嗎? 謝謝各位。

9/2: Anchorage-Seward/or Whittier (have day cruise for glacier & wildlife)
9/3: Seward-Homer-Anchorage (Kenai NWR)
9/4: Anchorage-Katmai NP(bear viewing)
9/5: Katmai NP-Anchorage(10000 smoke valley)
9/6: Anchorage-Denali (stop @ Talkeetna for lunch)
9/7: Denali NP (shuttle bus to Wonder lake)
9/8: Denali NP-Chena Hot Springs(northern light if possible)
9/9: Chena Hot Springs(???)
9/10: Fairbanks(northern light if possible)
9/11: Fairbanks-Tok-Gleenallen
9/12: Gleenallen-Valdez
9/13: Valdez-Anchorage(Prince William Sound by ferry)
Basically we just try different route when back ANC(hwy3 go N to Fairbanks than hwy2&4 go S to ANC). Also any suggestion after Gleenallen I should follow hwy1 which is Glenn hwy or continue to Valdz since Glenn hwy is pretty also.
Bwy if budget really limit than will I really regret if i just short Katmi tour to 1 day only??

Your plan looks pretty good.
I recommend the ferry route via Prince Williams Sound.
Of course, one day trip to Katmai is okay, too.

從LA來回最低的約500元，
從西雅圖來回最低的約300元，
是否有廉價航空或更加便宜的機票?
若從西雅圖到Anchorage或Whittier大概多遠?
這段路程開車方便嗎?
還有，看極光的最佳月份大約是哪時候?

Hooohohoh, the tkt to ANC or FAI always expensive. I dont know u but if u can than MUST use any kind of mileage to get free tkt. I was in TX & the $ from DFW-ANC is $580(AA) but even by Frontier air still cost $440. It's pretty nice to use only 25000mi to get free tkt.
For driving, I never think about that coz its too far(2400mi. 37hr 1 way). Most the city(AK) inside passage can not reach by car but should be still pretty I guess. For this only big katmai or some other 背包大俠 can help u lar...

SEA-ANC約4小時航程
開車極不方便，還要經過加拿大，是近3000哩的長征
不適合一般人 (除非你有很多時間)
而且油錢就已超過一個人的機票錢
淡季打折的時候坐遊輪反而可能比較便宜
我有買過單程Vancouver-Whittier只要500多美金的遊輪
7天包吃包住，當然一不小心就會花別的錢
看極光的季節是九月到三月
九十月和二三月特別好
用免費機票換去Alasak是最划算的方式
AA/NW/國泰航空的哩程計劃，都可以蠻容易的用25000哩左右換到美國本土到Alaska的來回機票
我換過四次美國本土-Alaska的機票，絕對是全世界最划算的免費機票
平均用不到20000哩換一張$800的機票

1. how do u guys think if I go Seward than i might try day cruise from there. For this case will the cruise in Prince William Sound(start from Whittier) or the one from Seward to Kenai NP better?? Which is MUST for 1st comer.
2. Also if I take train to Seward from Anchorage, than do I need to rent another car in Seward or what I am gonna to do btn train depot & hostel or to Exit glacier or to cruise place??
3. Is Homer or Valdez worth stay overnite?? If yes than we might not go there for time limitation!!

1. Both cruises are good. Whittier cruise has more glacier viewing and less wildlife, and calmer sea. Seward cruise has more wildlife, and potentially more unpredictable sea condition.
2. You'll need a rental car. Forget about seward train unless you only go on the cruise.

I tried to hire a 4WD with insurance coverage on off road condition in Fairbank, however, the effort was in vain, in spite of this, Subaru Legacy A4 4WD still works fine.....off road :-P

路上會經過portage, 有portage glacier (已退化不少)
比較好看的冰河，是Seward附近的Exit glacier，屬於Kenai Fjords NP
第三條開車就能到的冰河，是在北邊glen highway的路邊，叫做Matanuska glacier，車程也是一小時多，也蠻不錯的，去的人不多
我說的景點，都是Anchorage近郊，只有independence mine道路封閉，其他的都有開放，都可以安排在一起去。
從西雅圖/溫哥華搭cruise去阿拉斯加，雖然有優點，但也有很多缺點
它只能去到Southeast的峽灣/冰河地區，沒有辦法到達interior Alaska，所以不適合看極光的人，一年也只有夏天三四個月有開船

cruise是一種很悠閒/豪華的旅遊方式，偶一為之很不錯
