Blasts in Turkey Wound at Least 22
ISTANBUL, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Four separate blasts on Turkey's popular coastal region and in the country's commercial capital Istanbul injured 22 people, including 10 Britons, a state news agency and British authorities said on Monday.

Anatolian news agency said three blasts occurred around the Mediterranean resort of Marmaris early on Monday, including in the city centre, and another in Istanbul's Bagcilar district late on Sunday, injuring 22 people.

The British Foreign Office said 10 British tourists were among the injured and were in hospital, three in intensive care. There were no immediate claims of responsibility and Turkish authorities were not immediately available for comment.

The Britons were in a minibus on one of Marmaris' main streets, packed with bars and restaurants, when the blast occurred.

"I can confirm that there were three explosions but the (British) injuries all came from the first explosion," said a British embassy spokeswoman in Ankara. "All the British injuries were on the minibus."

Television pictures showed ambulances and police cars at the scene of the explosions.

Marmaris is a coastal resort popular with west European and Russian tourists as well as Turks -- for many the last weekend of their annual summer holiday.

Anatolian news agency quoted Istanbul police chief Celalettin Cerrah as saying six people had been injured when a device exploded near a school in Istanbul's Bagcilar.

"They left a package on a road against the garden wall... At around 2130 (1830 GMT) it exploded and six citizens were injured," Cerrah said, but did not provide further details of whether it was a bomb and who planted the device.

Police explosive experts wearing white suits were inspecting the blast sites in Marmaris.

Kurdish separatists, leftists and Islamic militants have carried out bomb attacks in Turkey in the past. The tourist industry is a powerful motor of the Turkish economy, hoping to reach $20 billion in revenues and 26 million visitors this year.

The blasts came only two days after two bombs exploded in the southern Turkish city of Adana, injuring four people.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which launched a separatist campaign in 1984, and other militant groups have been blamed or claimed responsibility for similar blasts in the past.

Turkey, like the United States and European Union, considers the PKK a terrorist organisation and blames it for the deaths of more than 30,000 people.

Ankara has recently increased its troop presence in the mainly Kurdish southeast, where security forces are battling PKK guerrillas.

'Two dead' in fresh Turkey blast
At least two people have died and several others have been injured in a blast at a resort in southern Turkey.
The explosion happened close to restaurants in the centre of the popular Mediterranean city of Antalya, officials said.

This blast came hours after three bombs hit the south-west coastal town of Marmaris, injuring at least 21.

Six Turkish nationals were also injured when a device exploded by a road in Istanbul on Sunday night.

A spokeswoman for the governor's office in Antalya said police were investigating the cause of the latest blast.

"It occurred in front of a building housing Turkish restaurants," Guzide Ormeci said.

The area around the scene has been cordoned off as the police investigation gets under way, the BBC's Sarah Rainsford says.

A police spokesman said the explosion happened just before 1700 local time. He could not confirm fatalities but said several people had been injured.

"A parked motorbike next to a tramway had exploded and pieces of the motorbike were shattered all around," a shaken local businessman told Reuters news agency.

"A man who was a street vendor was then dead."

Whatever the cause of the blast, this latest incident has only added to an already nervous atmosphere, our correspondent says.
