First Class

Hi there,
Just been to Egypt on my own this April.
Below are the travel tips. Click http://members13.clubphoto.com/ketchup1058382/4280760/guest.phtml if you'd like to see the photos.
Cairo:
1. Exchange rate: US1.00=LE5.75 (Egyptian Pounds). LE1=100 piastres. Change your money before you go though Custom if you arrive at night.
2. Taxi to downtown costs LE20. Ignore the touts. Walk towards the petrol station. You may also take a bus from there. I didn't take the one LP suggested. Bus NO. 27 goes to the bus station that closes to Egyptian Museum. LE2 per person. It's really fun.
3. Accommodation: I checked in a local Egyptian hotel called Invitation Hotel. It's in a residential building. You wouldn't know where it is
unless you know Arabic. Single room (with shared bathroom) costs LE70. It may not be the cheapest option but centrally located. You'll also get to met lots of local Egyptians. Send me a private message if you need further details. Or else you may try the other hostels around there. The nearest metro station is Sadat. It's just few minutes walk.
4. Metro is cheap, clean and convenient. 75 piastres for OW no matter how far you go. Mubarak (three stops away) is where the train
station located.
5. Taxi to the Pyramids from downtown (with two-hour waiting time) costs LE40. Or you may take the metro to Giza and then take a taxi
to go. It should cost about LE5-7. Always bargain with taxi drivers.
6. 2nd class overnight train (not sleeper) to Luxor costs LE60. There may be student discount offered. Wagon-lit train to Luxor (or Aswan) cost US$53.00 (Premiere costs US$74.00). It's a life time experience. Book in advance especially during peak season.
7. Egyptian Museum was great. Admission costs LE40. Strictly no cameras allowed into the Egyptian Museum. Expect to pay another hefty
admission LE70 for the mummy section. Don't waste your money if you've been to British Museum.
8. That's what I've seen at the airport: I've seen many locals checking in 60kg or more of stuff and they were not even charged a fee by the airline. They stuffed banknotes discreetly into the hands of airline staff and the porter. Then things were done. Wait a minute...wouldn't the flight be overloaded?
Luxor:
1. I stayed in Happyland Hotel. It's just 10 minutes walk from the dusty train station. Quiet and comfortable. Single room (shared bathroom) costs LE40. Breakfast included. Meal costs LE8-20 depending on what sorts of food you order. Have a cup of tea on the roof top. It's wonderful.
2. Rent a bike there. You'd need one to see things around;
3. The local ferry to the other side of River Nile is just oposite Luxor Temple. Ticket costs LE1 pp. I chartered a taxi to Valley of the Kings
and the Tombs of the Nobles (with three-hour waiting time) from the ferry pier. It costs LE35. It's worth it. Local transport doesn't go to these places.
4. Make a very careful choice before seeing the tombs in Valleys of the Kings. That LE55 admission allows you to see only three of the tombs. There is a trolley bus taking you up to the tombs from the main entrance. Ticket costs LE1. The security guards always ask for baksheesh.
5. Don't miss these noble tombs:R'Mose, Olwet Abdel Qurna & Mena and Nakht. Admission costs LE20 for each tomb. You have to buy the
tickets on the other side of the site. The locals and the security guards are so keen to show you around. Expect a pay a baksheesh. I gave the children some sweets, biscuits and drinks instead. There are also some local artists selling cheap handicrafts. Things look a bit coarse but cheap.
6. Try those cheap and juicy fruits in local markets. Egyptian oranges are famous worldwide.
7. That 3-hour train to Aswan costs LE22 for OW (LE17 for students).
Aswan:
1. The local ferry pier is quite far from the train station. You may like try the local buses (LE1) to get there. Then take a local ferry (LE1) to
Elephantine Island.
2. I spent most of my time in the museum (Admission LE20). You'll see some mummies in there. There is also an open section where you'll
see an excavation site.
The locals are so kind. I was invited for tea several times when I was in the country.
Ta!

2. Rent a bike there. You'd need one to see things around;
Ta!
