Construction on a Lao railway to link the country with the sub-region and other Asian countries is currently a top priority in the development of base infrastructure in Laos.

The installation of a railway will ensure a greater level of communication by land between various countries.
Construction work on the first railway in Laos will begin in at the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, and run for 3.5 km to Dongphosy village, Hadsaifong district, and is expected to be completed in 2007.

Railway spokesperson Mr Sonesak Noryansana reports that the concerned sector is preparing to implement this project in accordance with government plans, and will begin the project in early October, using low-interest loan funds from the Government of Thailand, worth 197 million baht.
Once the first phase of construction has been completed, the project will continue with the construction of a railway from Dongphosy village to Sokkham village, Saysetha district, Hadsaifong district, over a length of 9 km.
The second phase of construction will be undertaken with cooperation between the Lao, Thai and French governments, all of which have signed cooperative funding agreements worth approximately US $20 million. The project will also use funds worth E 150,000 granted by the French Development Agency (AFD).
A concurrent project will involve the construction of a railway between Donegaeng and Donekhone village, Khong district, Chapassak province, over a length of 7 km, a cooperative project between the Lao government and Kyungin Engineering and Construction Company, using funds of 8 million baht.
Mr Sonesak also says the work involved in developing a railway linking with the sub-region is very important, as it will ensure the transportation of goods in and out of the country. Such a system has a special significance for a landlocked country such as Laos, and a railway system will provide a cheaper means of transportation.

This is why the Lao Government, in particular the Ministry of Communication, Transportation, Post and Construction, is currently paying close attention to meeting all railway project targets successfully.
