Laos will have a Stock Market in 2010
A high-ranking delegation of the Lao PDR headed by Mr. Somsavat Lengsavad, Standing Deputy Prime Minister paid a working visit to the Republic of Korea on 19-22 September 2007. The main objective of the visit was to study the best practices and lessons-learned of the Republic of Korea in running the Stock Market considering the latter’s remarkable success in that area. On that occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding Cooperation in Capital Market Development in Lao PDR was signed between Mr. Phouphet Khamphounvong, Governor of the Bank of Lao PDR and Dr. Young-Tak Lee, Chairman & CEO of the Korea Exchange Inc. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad and other senior officials from the two sides.
Under this MOU, the Bank of Lao PDR and the Korea Exchange Inc. will cooperate to make necessary preparations towards establishing a stock market in Lao PDR starting with the establishment of a joint-working group whose mandate is to undertake a feasibility study on the setting up of a Lao stock market, and the organization of training programs for drawing up securities regulations and building up stock market expertise for Lao officials. Furthermore, the Bank of Lao PDR will review and amend the local laws and regulations in support of the establishment of the Lao stock market by 2010.
The stock market will be a vital tool for fund mobilization of the local companies, and thereby enabling the latter to significantly contribute to the national socio-economic development in accordance with the development goals of the Government. Prior to the establishment of the Lao Stock
Market, the Korea Exchange Inc. will cooperate with and assist Lao PDR with the preparation for Lao big companies to be listed on the Korea stock market.
This joint enterprise will not only benefit the Government of the Lao PDR and the Korea Exchange Inc. , but it will also further strengthen the cooperative relations of the two countries and peoples.
