我可以建議你住我們住過的TAWAN GUEST HOUSE,就在TAPE RODE上，步行距離TAPE GATE不用五分鐘，我們四個女生住三人房才400泰銖，也有個人房不含衛浴，好像才100塊不到吧，很有泰國風味！老闆也很好！

You can try this Guesthouse - Daret's House and Restaurant, which I've cut n paste from other forum member - Mr.PS.Lee at virtualtourist.com
It is situated about 100m from the Tapae Gate, outside the old city. The guesthouse is about 3-4 stories high, with about 6-8 rooms on each floor. The place was very clean and well maintained. The staffs speak good English and were very helpful. We booked for 1 double beds room and 1 triple beds room, all with hot shower, which cost only THB 180 and THB 280 respectively (as @ Aug'07). Rooms with no hot shower will cost roughly THB 20 less. But unfortunately they do not accept telephone booking. That's why you will never find this guesthouse in any of the online booking services. Maybe the only way you can do is to call them to check whether your visit is during a peak season or otherwise... oh... another thing is Thais are not allowed in the guesthouse (except owner & workers). Prostitute is absolutely banned in the premiss. Only foreigners will be accepted. I think this place is suitable for budget family vacation and for those who wants a 'clean' place to stay...

Directions: About 80m to the North-East of Tapae Gate. Along the Chaiyaphum road & beside the old city canal. Best landmark nearby is Amora Tapae Hotel. From the hotel, follow the traffic flow and you will see Daret's House & Restaurant about 100m away at your left.

I just arrived at Chiang Mai, and live at TAWAN.
It's near 7-11 on the Thae Pae Rd, but you have to turn right into an avenue (no. 6). I live in a single room,just took a shower and found poopoo on the floor.
There's a flower festival around the Thae Pae gate this weekend. Come and join! Hardly see any Taiwanese.
