Jackson West Yellow Stone, MT 125.4 3

Sheridan Rapid City,SD 243.1 2
Rapid City Sioux Falls,SD 348.0 1
Jewel Cave

More on AAA:

1) I believe anyone could be an AAA member, it is a yearly membership. When you receive AAA services the only requirement is showing a valid AAA membership card and your driver license (with matched name). You could join it online (as other backpacker friends have suggested) or have your US friend to purchase an AAA membership for you; this way you will get the membership card before your road trip. Many attractions and hotels on the road will give discounts to AAA members.

2) If your rental car has mechanical problems then the car company will replace the car. If there are any road hazards then I think you have to fix it first. AAA provides some roadside services free for their members; like flat tires, dead battery, lockout, out of gas, towing (distances are depending on the membership classes). Road hazards may never happen -- those services are just for having a peace of mind.

3) AAA not only provides city/state/US maps free to their members, they also have an excellent state tour book which is updated yearly (they are free too). Another free service for their auto traveling members is the personalized TripTik tour guide.

Two other suugestions:

1) Some rental car contracts only allow you to drive within the state or go thru its neighborhood states. So be sure ask your rental car company first.

2) Try to borrow a cell phone from your friends or buy a phone card for the trip. Phone cards at Costco or Sam's are cheaper -- $20 for 700 domestic minutes.

The phone card I mentioned is good within the US (I did use it from Texas to Hawaii but never try to call Alaska). I think it is a very good deal especially for the trip. The phone card will also work for foreign countries with much higher minute rate. If you're calling from a payphone then it will also deduct about 65 cents(?) from the phone card's balance. My MCI phone card is getting from Costco, I think Sam's phone card is AT&T.
