磨西鎮位於甘孜州瀘定縣南部，地處貢嘎山風景區東坡，海螺溝冰川森林公園入口處，屬海螺溝風景名勝區週邊保護地帶，是海螺溝名勝風景區的旅遊接待基地和入口，磨西鎮距成都約304公里，距瀘定52公里，距康定約70公里，現已建成磨西至康定的公路，遊完海螺溝可直接到康定遊覽高原名城。

磨西鎮是漢、彝，藏民族聚居地。那具有清代建築格調的農舍，由一條自流灌渠所串聯的水磨房與灌溉系統組成山地農村的古樸風貌，在磨西鎮仍然保留著法國人修建的天主教堂和1935年毛澤東等中央領導人率領紅軍路徑的宿營地。
