Far west of NSW

you have to spend 2 days to get blue card. it costs you about 120 au dollars(you can join the class in perth city). this job is not for everyone. usually, you have to sign a contract with mining company and promise working for them at least 6 months. the wage is about au 2000 a week(maybe less, cause you are new worker and have no experience).
it's a very tough job. if you just want money, you can go to Kargoolie-Boulder. Ask YHA backpacker manager, she can help you.
good luck.

A high-paid mining job could be covetous to backpackers.

Of course, physical fitness is imporant, but qualifications are equally necessary.

If you think such a job is your cup of tea, then read on:

Most of you (99.9%) that I believed don't have any mining related skills. The closest I can think of is you have some mechanical skills (ie. Black Hand in TW) or heavy vehicle driving skills.

Those of you who have some mechanical skills, then a fitter job maybe suitable for you.

First you need to obtain the Blue Card qualification. You can do it on-line. Only $60-$65.

http://www.ohsa.com.au/bluecard/

However, this is only a start. Then it depends on what you want to do, there are heaps of other induction courses that you are required to do.

http://www.ohsa.com.au/courses.htm

For example, you need to do Confined Space Courses if you are planning to work underground. Or you need to do Coal Surface Refreshers if you want to do work on open pit coal mine.

http://www.search4jobs.com.au/training/browse/o/training-and-tuition-mining-oil-gas/

If you wish to drive a heavy vehicle, then you need to get all the related tickets.

------------------------------

Congratualtions if you have obtained the nessary qualifications. Don't know about WA, here are some of the benefits that I heard from my miner friends:

You get to choose to work 4 days on and 4 days off, 7 days on and 7 days off, or 13 days on and 13 days off. You still get 4 weeks of annual leave and all the sick days with full pay.

You get all the free meals and accomodation. And of course, free transfer from the mine site to the nearest town.

Pay ranging from $50k to $150k a year. Here are some example:

I have a friend who is washing coal all day. His pay is $25/hr.

One friend who is driving a dump truck with air condition cabin, and only driving forward and backward, and reading dirty magazine when he is waiting to get load up. His pay is $90k a year.

Another friend who is driving a dozer on an open pit mine. This is a high risk job, but he gets $150k a year.

I have other friends who also work in the mining industry, from electrician, diesel fitter, plumber, cleaning contractor, to even kitchenhand. Good pay but most of them have told me, they are very boring jobs. Practically there is no personal life.

-----------------------

Anyway, I am not a miner and know very little about the job. Do not believe all what I said. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

If you are a miner, or in the process of becoming one, do come here to share your experience.
